The Chiquibul Cave System is a system of four hydrologically linked caves totalling approximately 149.7 hectares in length. Explorations conducted in the 80s have revealed that the cave system starts in Belize’s Chiquibul Forest but ends in Guatemala. The section in Guatemala is known as Xibalba. FCD has partnered with Atlas Arqueológico (AA) from Guatemala to understand more of this complex system of caves. The Xibalba entrance is monstrous with two passages that form an entrance of 180 meters across and has architectural modifications of a Maya-built stone wall and numerous platforms inside the cave. For the Maya, the caves provided a portal into the past and a mystical, sacred place for their ancestors. The aim is to preserve this pristine cultural heritage.
