Since FCD’s inception in 1989, it was created as a membership-type organization with the aim of engaging and involving local people from all walks of life. Over the years, FCD has also recognized that members can have the power to support conservation issues important for the appropriate development of the country and thus they can become an important voice for defending FCD’s mission.
Presently, the FCD is a membership-based organization that holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) which serves as the primary governance mechanism to decide the administration of the organization. At this event, members can nominate and elect Board of Directors. The Board of Directors can serve from 4 to 6 years, creating a staggered appointment system that enhances institutionalized continuity at the Board level.
The membership of FCD includes individuals from the communities in the Cayo District that have traditionally been involved in FCD activities, as well as individuals from Belize and abroad who support the organization’s work. From a member’s viewpoint, joining an organization provides an avenue for doing conservation action and a channel for voicing opinions.
FCD has thrived over the years thanks to its membership program. Initially, the only membership category was for students. YEAG members used to pay a membership fee of $5.00 Annually. The level of involvement can vary depending on the age groups, interests, enthusiasm, location, or profession of members.
When you join FCD, you become part of a community dedicated to a conservation movement and in support of FCD’s mission. You will receive special information on the most recent conservation initiatives. As a member, you will also have the following benefits:
Office access to information
Field experiences and expeditions
